Why is the use of live bait prohibited in most standard bass tournaments?
Every bass tournament, big and small, seems to adopt a fairly consistent set of rules. Most of the rules are pretty easy to understand. One rule that has always confused me is the "No Live Bait" rule. Just looking for theories on the purpose of the rule.

hey there, live bait is prohibited in most turneys around here (southeast ga) because they are wanting the anglers to use their skills and different methods of aritficial baits. there are different ways to fish live bait but it is pretty much the same thing. using artificial take patients, skill, and good ol fashion know how when it comes to finding and catching the fish. it kinda smooths out the playing field when it comes to the turrneys. everyone has to fish with artificial kinda keeps things in balance. another thing is that most places it is against the law to release any live bait into the water ways when you are done fishing. keeping the live bait out of the turneys may be a way to keep the anglers from doing just that. i really dont understand the whole “dont toss in live bait” thing but i have seen in serveral states that i have fished (or atleast the area in those states) there are signs posted about tossing in live baits. that is probably the main thing that the host of the turneys are concerned about. hope that helps you out a bit good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

Most tournaments are sponsored (at leas in part) by lure companies. Do you really think that they want to give a prize to someone who caught his fish on plain old worms or minnows or crawdads?
Personally, I think that whatever fishing methods are legal in the lake the tournament is in should be legal for the tournament, but then, I don’t sponsor the tournaments.

It takes a lot longer to catch a fish using bait. You can work an area a lot faster with a lure.
