Natural bait for Ice Fishing.

The Goldenrod Gall Fly larva I collected for Ice fishing bait worked as well, or better than the bait-store Waxies for catching Crappies and Sunfish. It was fun to bring something like this from the ground up and go out on a frozen Lake and actually catch fish. If you are in a pinch, or short of cash, you can collect natural bait from the wild in the dead of winter. Goldenrod Gall Fly larva have a natural antifreeze in them that stops them from freezing to death in the winter. In Minnesota, it is illegal to use pan-fish for bait, but in a pinch, or a survival situation, I would of used the smaller fish I caught with the Goldenrod Gall Fly larva to bait my Tip-up rig for Northern Pike and Walleye. The Goldenrod Gall Fly Larva will be better than a bare hook for attracting pan-fish in the dead of winter. The only small draw back is the Goldenrod Gall Fly larva shed off the hook easier than bait-store Waxies on light fish strikes. A smaller hook may of helped prevent this. 3 hours of collecting Goldenrod Gall Fly larva out in the wild should give you a full day of fishing. THE FISH LOVE GOLDENROD GALL FLY LARVA

Hey, thanks for the advice! I will have to try that out. Wax worms from the bait shop work great too, but the nearest bait shop that sells them is about 8 miles from my house, so my gasoline costs are another couple dollars. Chicken is very cheap and if I don’t catch any fish, I can eat chicken for dinner, minus the skin. I will definitely try your suggestion some time shortly. I may make another short video about using chicken skin as bait. Thank You! -Greg

I have used these before myself and work good. What i found works well also is chicken skin (uncooked). Take the skin off a chicken breast and cut it into small strips, about 1 and a quarter inches by 3 eights of an inch. Put them in a small container with salt water. (table salt & water) You can keep it in the fridge or the freezer. 1 peice will stay on the hook much longer than any other live bait. I have had many times where 1 peice lasted me all afternoon. Works for all panfish.
