Help with a bait casting reel ?
I just bought a new Browning MD1000S bait casting reel. I casted it and the line became a big birds nest. Is it because my line was old ? Or am I not using it right ?

There are two things that matter the most on bait casting. Your reel has to be properly adjusted. And you have to learn how to thumb the spool to prevent back lashing. It will take practice to get used to it. Once you do, you will never fish with anything else.

Try adjusting the reels brake system(s)
Tie on the lure you want to use, reel it almost all the way to the rod tip, hold the rod tip out and push the button! The lure should slowly fall, not free fall and not hang. It will probally freefall since you are backlashing, so on the rightside (most reels) near the handle there is a round knob, turn it a little clockwise (tighten it) Repeat the process. When you think you got it where it needs to be, tighten it up a hair more. Cast it, it probally won’t go very far, slowly loosen it up until you are happy. Baitcasters are not easy to master, you have to be smooth. and use your thumb when the lure hits the water.
It takes practice. When I was little I used to take my dads baitcasters out in the yard and try to cast them, of coarse i’d birdsnest and run put them up. Then dad would find them and I’d get in trouble. But the point is I practiced for a while before I mastered them, now I hate using anything else

If you are just learning how to use a bait caster i would set all your settings tight and go outside for a few hours and just practice throiwing it with the setting this tight you dont really have to use ur thumb as much as u get better you can loosen the settings and you will eventoually find the setting you are most comfortable with….once u figure out how to use one you wont ever go back to a spinning reel

What you have is called many thhngs , bird’s nest , backlash, or a professional overspin , depending on how experienced you are with it . What you have is a mess and it has nothing to do with your line. A baitcaster has to be set properly if you have magnetic drags , and other settings to do before you cast and when you change baits or fish into the wind yu change your setttings , otherwise it is backlash city all day . You can overcome this however by sitting on your front porch and casting , and casting , and casting until you get it right and you will . Just keep practicing . You have the best kind of reel to fish with now keep practicing.
